A European logistics park needed an automated gate system for truck access to enhance safety and operational efficiency. Traditional manual monitoring was time-consuming and prone to errors, especially during peak hours when multiple trucks queued, leading to low throughput and higher management costs.
To address these challenges, a practical non-contact solution was required. The KUM-B split ultrasonic sensor was selected to detect the vertical distance from the sensor to vehicle tops, enabling automatic gate opening only for trucks.

The main challenges included:
The KUM-B split ultrasonic sensor system was implemented to provide high-mounted, non-contact detection of vehicle height, triggering the gate automatically when vehicles exceeded a pre-set height threshold.
The system included:
| Parameter | Specification |
| Measuring Range | 6 m (sensor to ground / max height) |
| Height Trigger Threshold | 3 m (vertical distance from sensor to vehicle top) |
| Measurement Accuracy | ±1% |
| Ambient Temperature | Probe: -20 ~ +80 °C, LED unit: -20 ~ +60 °C |
| Protection Class | Probe: IP68, LED: IP66 |
Sensor installation
The KUM-B probe was mounted 6 m above ground on overhead brackets, ensuring full coverage of truck paths. The split LED/control module was installed in a weatherproof housing nearby.

Measurement and gate control
The sensor continuously measures the vertical distance to approaching vehicles. When the distance falls below 3 m, the system triggers the gate to open. Vehicles below the threshold are ignored, preventing false openings.
Maintenance and monitoring
Monthly visual inspections are performed to ensure stability. The split design allows easy access for sensor or module replacement without interrupting gate operation.

| Performance Indicator | Result |
| Height Detection Accuracy | ±1% |
| System Reliability | 99% uptime |
| Maintenance Frequency | Twice per year |
| Installation Time | 1–2 hours per gate |
| Labor Reduction | Eliminated manual gate monitoring |
| Safety Improvement | Only trucks trigger gate, reducing accidental openings |
The KUM-B split ultrasonic sensor provided a practical, reliable, and non-contact solution for automated truck gate access. By measuring vertical distance, the system distinguishes trucks from smaller vehicles, improving both safety and operational efficiency. Its split design and robust outdoor performance make it suitable for industrial logistics parks where ease of installation, maintenance, and cost-effective automation are prioritized.
